The FDA is developing a food safety prevention strategy to enhance the safety of fresh and frozen berries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will present a webinar for stakeholders on August 11, 2022, at 1pm EST, to discuss Food Facility Registration, Biennial Renewal, and obtaining an acceptable Unique Facility Identifier. This guidance provides answers to commonly asked questions that we have received from these interested parties regarding the Orange Book. The FDA is releasing a draft guidance on the expanded use of remote regulatory assessments (RRAs) and how the FDA generally intends this tool, once finalized, to be incorporated consistently across all FDA-regulated products. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule that would update the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Codes for reporting to EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) to conform to the 2022 NAICS codes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is opening a docket to obtain data and information on the use of fluorinated polyethylene for food contact applications. Either electronic or written comments and scientific data and information must be submitted by October 18, 2022. The draft revised risk determination proposes to find that 1-BP, as a whole chemical substance, presents an unreasonable risk of injury to human health under the conditions of use. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing a final rule to update the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) chemical list to identify five additional PFAS subject to reporting requirements. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will reopen the comment period for the request for information seeking available use and safety information on the remaining phthalates authorized for use as plasticizers in food contact applications. The OECD adopts a new testing method (442E) to shift skin allergy tests away from using animals. This is the first cruelty-free test method that has the ability to predict whether a chemical can cause skin allergies by using a genomic signature of skin allergies. The OECD adopts two groundbreaking test methods (124, 125) for measuring unique characteristics of nanomaterials, indicative of their potential hazard on health and the environment. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) submitted a proposal on 15 July 2022 to restrict the manufacture, use and placing on the market of substances, mixtures and articles containing medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCP) and other substances that contain chloroalkanes with carbon chain lengths ranging from C14 to C17. Based on currently available information, there is a need for (further) EU regulatory risk management – Restriction for reproductive toxicity, mutagenicity, ED and/or PBT/vPvB due to the potential for release/exposure and/or the potential for interchangeability for EC/List 201-667-2, 226-827-9, 280-041-0, 282-803-8 and 800-991-7. The France, Ireland and Germany request interested parties to submit information on skin sensitising substances in mixtures intended for consumers, including data on types of uses, planned substitutions, epidemiological data on allergic contact dermatitis and information on healthcare costs.
