Higher international quotations for vegetable oils, dairy products and meat more than offset lower quotations for cereals and sugar. Rising international quotations for vegetable oils, dairy products and meat pushed the benchmark index for world food commodity prices up by 1.1 percent in March, its first increase in seven months, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported. The sixth annual meeting of the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) under the Canada-European Union (EU) Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will take place in Ottawa on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. Following this meeting, on Thursday, April 25, 2024, the Canadian and EU Co-chairs will provide a debrief to stakeholders on all active work plan items and items of interest. Registration deadline is April 17, 2024. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 2024 North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria are now in effect. The 2024 out-of-service criteria replace and supersede all previous versions. Last year, the voting members of the Alliance approved 11 changes to the out-of-service criteria. In accordance with the CVSA Bylaws, the proposed changes were communicated to the voting members of the Alliance on Oct. 5, 2023, and ratified on Oct. 20, 2023. The out-of-service criteria are updated annually, effective April 1 of each year.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) today announced the publication of the 2024 Edition of its Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG). This newly revised manual is free of charge to emergency responders and provides guidance on what to do during the initial stages of a hazmat transportation incident. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) EPA is proposing significant new use rules (SNURs) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for chemical substances that were the subject of premanufacture notices (PMNs). The chemical substances received “not likely to present an unreasonable risk” determinations pursuant to TSCA. The SNURs require persons who intend to manufacture (defined by statute to include import) or process any of these chemical substances for an activity that is proposed as a significant new use by this rulemaking to notify EPA at least 90 days before commencing that activity. For those unfamiliar with computer science, it can be overwhelming to try and grasp the many facets of artificial intelligence and their implications. The Codex Alimentarius itself is an open access resource of all the science-based information developed into standards, guidelines and codes of practice that support countries to ensure food produced both domestically and for export is safe for human consumption. The right to food is a human right, and if it is not safe, it is not food.
