The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a proposed rule to update the definition of the nutrient content claim “healthy”. The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is seeking a Canadian senior executive with environmental management experience to become the next Chair of ISO/Technical Committee (TC) 207 – Environmental management. Health Canada’s Food Directorate has prepared this document to outline the steps to complete the Application Form for Pre-Market Submissions to the Food Directorate (Online Application Form) for the submission of novel food, infant formula, and food additive notifications. The Online Application Form replaces all existing methods (i.e. email, hard copy, and courier) of filing novel food, infant formula and food additive submissions to the Food Directorate. This October, Communication Security Establishment Canada and its Get Cyber Safe campaign launch Cyber Security Awareness Month 2022 (Cyber Month) with the theme “Fight phishing: Ruin a cyber criminal’s day!”

The Food & Drug Administration released its Activities to Enhance the Safety of Imported Produce, which provides an overview of the work underway to advance the safety of produce imported into the United States. On September 30, 2022 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued guidance announcing the agency’s plans to provide a pathway for manufacturers of infant formula under enforcement discretion to market infant formula products that may not currently comply with specific FDA requirements while they work toward meeting those requirements. The guidance balances the need to ensure that infant formula products meet regulatory requirements with the need for a more resilient infant formula supply. The Food & Drug Administration issued a draft guidance for industry titled “Providing Over-the-Counter Monograph Submissions in Electronic Format.” The Food & Drug Administration reopened the comment period for the request for information seeking available use and safety information on the remaining phthalates authorized for use as plasticizers in food contact applications. The new deadline for comments is Dec. 27, 2022. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is amending the color additive regulations to provide for the safe use of calcium carbonate in dietary supplement tablets and capsules. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing its withdrawal of all remaining portions of the interim registration review decision for glyphosate. Pesticide products containing glyphosate continue to remain on the market and be used according to the product label and are unaffected by this action. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is posting two Regulatory Status Review (RSR) responses under the revised biotechnology regulations at 7 CFR part 340. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing significant new use rules (SNURs) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for chemical substances that were the subject of premanufacture notices (PMNs). The SNURs require persons who intend to manufacture (defined by statute to include import) or process any of these chemical substances for an activity that is designated as a significant new use by this rule to notify EPA at least 90 days before commencing that activity. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mends its regulations by making technical corrections throughout the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs). The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) intends to list antimony (trivalent compounds) as known to the state to cause cancer under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65). This action is being proposed pursuant to the “Labor Code” listing mechanism. OEHHA has determined that this substance meets the criteria for listing by this mechanism. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is pleased to announce IARC Monographs Meeting 135. The meeting for Volume 135, Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), will be held on 7–14 November 2023. This consultation relates to proposed changes to the information an introducer must know about their introduction and the records they must keep. Consultation closes October 11, 2022. The setting of maximum levels for acrylamide in certain foods complementary to measures provided by the Regulation (EU) 2017/2158 is currently under consideration. The purpose of the assessment of regulatory needs of a group of substances is to help authorities conclude on the most appropriate way to address the identified concerns for a group of substances or a single substance, i.e. the combination of the regulatory risk management instruments to be used and any intermediate steps, such as data generation, needed to initiate and introduce these regulatory measures. Denmark, France, Germany and Ireland are requesting interested parties to submit information related to skin sensitising substances in consumer mixtures. The information gathered will be used to assess the need for regulatory actions on skin sensitisers in consumer mixtures. After a prolonged postponement due to travel restrictions brought about by COVID-19, the Fourth Meeting of the Intersessional Process considering the Strategic Approach and sound management of chemicals and waste (IP4) took place in Bucharest from 29 August to 2 September 2022.
