The Government of Canada would like to remind you that the deadline for responding to the Notice with respect to certain substances on the Revised In Commerce List, including biopolymers, plant extracts, mineral extracts, proteins, fats, animal extracts, waxes, and carbohydrates, published on March 12, 2022 in the Canada Gazette, Part I, is September 14, 2022. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives announce their planned review of the safety of aspartame. This work is extremely important as it will review new evidence which may result in restrictions for the use of aspartame in foods. Important amendments to the Competition Act became law on June 23, 2022, strengthening the Competition Bureau’s ability to protect Canadian consumers, businesses and workers from anti-competitive conduct. The 2022 Committee Leadership Conference will take place on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at the Victoria Inn and Convention Centre. Section 7 of Regulation 851 requires that a pre-start health and safety review be carried out in facilities on certain machinery, protective elements, structures, and processes that can pose a serious hazard to worker health and safety, before they are operated for the first time or before modifications are made. WorkSafeNB is seeking stakeholder feedback to understand the economic and business impacts of proposed amendments to General Regulation 91-191 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) s issuing significant new use rules (SNURs) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for chemical substances which were the subject of premanufacture notices (PMNs). This rule is effective on August 26, 2022. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) reinstated the excise taxes imposed on certain chemicals and imported chemical substances under Internal Revenue Code sections 4661 through 4672 beginning July 1, 2022. The Superfund chemical taxes will be reported on Form 720, Quarterly Federal Excise Tax Return, and Form 6627, Environmental Taxes. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing a broad outreach effort to describe and discuss with stakeholders how the Agency evaluates data provided for new chemicals submissions and common issues that cause EPA to have to reconduct risk assessments (“rework”) for these submissions. Beginning July 24, 2022, the entity identification code “UNK” will no longer be accepted in the Entity Number field by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Consistent with 21 CFR 1.509(a), FSVP importers will be required to ensure that their valid, 9-digit DUNS number is provided in the Entity Number field. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a proposed rule titled, “Nonprescription Drug Product with an Additional Condition for Nonprescription Use,” which is intended to broaden the range of marketed nonprescription drugs available to consumers, empowering them to self-treat certain common conditions and improving public health. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has adopted an NSRL of 3.7 micrograms per day for exposures to 1,3-dichloropropene by the oral and inhalation routes (adopted in Title 27, Cal. Code of Regs., Section 25705(b)). Assessing chemicals in groups has sped up authorities’ work, with assessments for 1 900 substances finalised in 2021. For around 300 of these, risk management actions could begin immediately. Safety Share On April 27, 46 jurisdictions in Canada and the U.S. removed 1,290 commercial motor vehicles with brake-related critical vehicle inspection item violations from Canadian and American roadways. That’s 14.1% of the 9,132 commercial motor vehicles inspected that day. Summer is too short to miss due to a heat-related illness that could have been easily avoided.
