At the 61st annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology (SOT), held March 27-31, NIEHS scientists explored topics such as nonanimal toxicity testing, cardiovascular disease, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), artificial intelligence (AI), and more. Institute researchers participated in nearly 90 presentations, and several scientists were honored with awards. Climate change is already affecting workers’ health and safety. Program requirements for Nova Scotia’s voluntary program will not change. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking action to protect people from asbestos exposure by releasing a proposed rule to prohibit ongoing uses of the only known form of asbestos currently imported into the U.S. This proposed rule is the first-ever risk management rule issued under the new process for evaluating and addressing the safety of existing chemicals under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) that was enacted in 2016. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or the Agency) is issuing a technical amendment to modify the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) list of hazardous substances adding the Clean Air Act (CAA) HAP 1-Bromopropane (CASRN 106-94-5). FDAs Office of Pharmaceutical Quality (OPQ) in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) released a white paper titled Quality Management Maturity: Essential for Stable U.S. Supply Chains of Quality Pharmaceuticals. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA, we, or the Agency) is amending the regulations for food additives permitted in feed and drinking water of animals to provide for the safe use of methyl esters of conjugated linoleic acid for early lactation dairy cows to reduce the energy concentration in milk. The draft guidance replaces the 2018 draft guidance and is intended to further emphasize the importance of ensuring that devices are designed securely, enabling emerging cybersecurity risks to be mitigated throughout the Total Product Life Cycle, and to outline the FDAs recommendations more clearly for premarket submission content to address cybersecurity concerns. Release 2.0 includes about 425 foods. Values are provided as “per serving” and “per 100 gram” amounts. This year’s annual report reflects the final update on accomplishments achieved in the last year of our 2017–2021 strategic plan. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and the Member States have assessed a group of 148 bisphenols and recommended that more than 30 bisphenols need to be restricted due to their potential hormonal or reprotoxic effects. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will update the intention to submit an Annex XV restriction dossier on medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCP) to include uses in PVC as well as other substances that contain chloroalkanes with carbon chain lengths within the range C14 to C17 The results of the recent IARC Monographs evaluation of the carcinogenicity of nine agents, including cobalt metal (without tungsten carbide or other metal alloys), soluble cobalt(II) salts, cobalt(II) oxide, cobalt(II,III) oxide, cobalt(II) sulfide, other cobalt(II) compounds, trivalent antimony, pentavalent antimony, and weapons-grade tungsten (with nickel and cobalt) alloy, have now been published in The Lancet Oncology.
