Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is a national event supported by Public Safety Canada, working closely with provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental organizations, and private sector organizations who support activities at the local level. An annual event for over 25 years, it traditionally takes place during the first full week of May. On May 2, 2023, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) launched a public consultation seeking feedback on two new proposed directives related to the import and domestic movement of propagative fruit tree material. Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Program is pleased to announce that the quarterly infographic, “Consumer product and cosmetics reports received”, is now migrated to the Public Health Infobase. The Regulatory Affairs Sector of the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) is seeking input from interested stakeholders on a consultation on the Annual Regulatory Modernization Bill (ARMB). Comments must be received by May 26, 2023. The program is designed as a professional development opportunity for those working in a regulatory environment at the analyst, program, or operational level. Delivered as a collaborative effort between Carleton University’s Faculty of Public Affairs and the Faculty of Science, this certificate program provides a unique forum where regulatory professionals convene to learn from experts, innovators, and from each other, as they deepen their capacity to deliver excellent regulatory programs in government, industry associations, and beyond. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to address the unreasonable risk of injury to human health presented by methylene chloride under its conditions of use as documented in EPA’s June 2020 Risk Evaluation for Methylene Chloride and November 2022 revised risk determination for methylene chloride prepared under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The proposal is to prohibit must uses of methylene chloride. Comments must be submitted by June 2, 2023. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is pleased to announce that Volume 131 of the IARC Monographs, Cobalt, antimony compounds, and weapons-grade tungsten alloy, is now available online. The European Commission welcomes the positive vote of the EU countries on the REACH committee for its proposal to restrict microplastics that are intentionally added to products. In 2022 the Codex Secretariat began work on reviewing the formatting and layout of Codex texts to ensure consistency, to meet FAO and international publishing standards and to enhance readability. A digital object identifier has also been added to standards as they are published, providing a unique reference that can support tracking and citation of each text. The project is part of the Codex Secretariat’s contribution to the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The Codex Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (CCFICS) work concluded on May 5, 2023.
